Moving in formation in Aisne, France
On July 19, 2015, around midnight, two people observe through binoculars a line of several orange lights in the sky. The objects flicker, and the whole thing suggests a formation flight moving from West to East. One witness notices a final light that comes to join the others very quickly. Only one testimony is collected.
Given the elements gathered in the investigation report (see attached), namely:
- The orange color identical to that of lanterns.
- The behavior identical to that of objects subjected to no wind or light wind (moderate speed).
- The short observation duration (about 1 minute) compatible with the lifespan of lanterns.
- The date: a Sunday evening, compatible with times favorable to organizing lantern launches for celebrations.
- The number compatible with that of lanterns launched in quantity.
- The illusion of acceleration and disappearance caused by the extinguishing of the lanterns or entry into the cloud layer.
- The absence of noise.
GEIPAN classifies this case as "B" as a very probable observation of Thai lanterns.
