On June 30, 2015, GEIPAN received a questionnaire about an observation made on November 10, 2012 at 9:30 PM by a single witness. This witness, on his terrace, observed in the sky a dark triangular phenomenon whose corners and center were equipped with orange-yellow lights. It moved at low speed and without noise, then pivoted 90 degrees and headed due west at a lightning speed.
Given the elements collected in the investigation report (see attached document), namely:
- Orange-yellow color identical to that of lanterns.
- Behavior identical to that of objects subjected to no or weak wind.
- Short observation duration (less than 1 minute) compatible with the lifespan of lanterns.
- Date: a Saturday evening, compatible with times favorable to organizing lantern launches for celebrations.
- Number compatible with that of lanterns launched in quantity.
- Illusion of acceleration and disappearance caused by the extinguishing of the lanterns.
- 90-degree turn possibly caused by a horizontal shear phenomenon.
GEIPAN classifies this observation case as "B" as a probable observation of Thai lanterns.
