It is quieter than most of what this record holds. There is often nothing to see at all. The whole event is the gap itself, and the unease of not being able to close it.
Lost time, time loss, a time slip, missing hours. In the UFO literature it is one of the classic reported after-effects; outside it, people describe the same gap after a long night drive or a stretch of exhaustion, with no strange lights attached at all. We keep those two apart on purpose.
Highway hypnosis is real: the mind runs a familiar, monotonous drive on autopilot and lays down almost no memory of it. Fatigue, micro-sleeps and ordinary absent-mindedness account for a great deal of lost time, and any honest account has to get past them first. What remains is the smaller set where the gap is large, the person was not tired, and the missing stretch will not fill back in.
