Every account here has a button underneath it saying this happened to me too. This is that count, sorted. It is the closest thing this site has to a popular page and it is deliberately not measuring popularity.
An upvote measures how many people enjoyed reading something. Sites like this one always end up with a top page, and it always fills with whichever account was written most vividly. That is a competition between storytellers.
This counts how many people recognised it. A flatly written account of something ordinary and widely shared will beat a spectacular one nobody else has lived through, and it should. Being recognised is the thing this place exists to measure, and a well-turned phrase is not evidence of anything.
It is also the cheapest possible version of writing an account, for the very large number of people who will read something here, know exactly what it is, and never write their own. Writing yours is worth more, because then the engine searches the whole record for the others and keeps searching after you have gone.

Standing in the yard after midnight I heard three slow knocks come from the treeline, then something answered from the other side of the field. The dogs would not go out.
