Red lights in Ardennes, France

On March 29, 2017 at 7:19 a.m., a motorist on the A34 heading toward Charleville-Mézières observed a particular phenomenon in the clear sky. The witness was surprised by a bright point, then a short time later, he observed a black shape that could correspond to an airplane. The object appeared static and seemed to be pouring out a substance, which could be a mixture of smoke and water. The witness arrived underneath the observed craft and took photos and a video. He then noted a triangular shape and two large wings. A red light was present at the center of the object, which eventually disappeared from the witness's view. The observed object was identified as an A380 observed under particular conditions (Flight Number: SQ336 - SQ336 9V-SKF - Call Sign: SIA336 - Airbus A380-841 - from Singapore to CDG): see the attached investigation report. The strangeness caused by the stability or low speed of the UAP (at least during part of the observation) results from a pivot effect: since the witness and the airplane are moving in directions with opposing components, the line of sight between the witness and the UAP tends to pivot near a fixed point where the witness, who cannot assess the change in distance, believes he sees the UAP as nearly stationary. The witness thought that material was pouring out of the UAP, when in reality it was intermittent contrails, because the airplane was moving at altitude and encountered varying conditions for contrail formation. We invite you to view the videos of an A380's contrails by following the internet links on page 18 of the investigation report. Another strangeness resulted from the variable brightness in intensity and color of the UAP. The airplane reflected toward the witness the sunlight (which itself is not visible to the witness). This reflection is variable, even intermittent, depending on the geometric evolution (it is one or another part of the airplane that produces the reflection). As the airplane descends, the sun seen from the airplane approaches the horizon and becomes reddish (a rapid sunset seen from the airplane), and the reflection on the airplane also takes on color. All these reflection phenomena were able to be reproduced by simulation. Consequently, GEIPAN classifies the case as A: observation of a commercial airliner.
