On Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 11:45 PM, a witness on their property observed for two minutes the movements of two luminous objects, white and red in color, in the night sky. The two objects seemed to fly one behind the other. No particular noise was heard during the observation, which ended at 11:53 PM. The witness reported their observation by letter to the gendarmerie. The investigation established that no particular meteorological phenomenon occurred that evening, no fireworks were organized by town halls in the area, and no military training flight took place. The local investigation did not yield any other eyewitness accounts of the observation. The observation of white and red lights crossing the sky in a few minutes, on a weekend night, strongly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. The movement was observed from the northwest (Bailleval) toward the west (see map), which is consistent with the northeast wind of 20 to 30 km recorded at Creil (see the day's data from Météociel). However, a few elements of the observation report fit poorly with the hypothesis of objects carried by the northeast wind: -the objects stop above the marsh: this fact requires that the wind weaken at that location, or change direction: this remains possible given the particular relief of this especially humid valley. -one of the objects heads upward toward Ars, due west: this description could correspond to the progressive extinguishing of the lantern; witnesses often interpret this decrease in brightness as a distancing. -the second object leaves the witness's visual frame at very high speed in the direction of Bailleval (that is, toward the north, therefore against the wind): this point is absolutely contradictory with an object carried by the wind, unless one considers that it is also a perceptual illusion during the extinguishing of the lantern. -The return of the second object would then be a third lantern launched from the same place, toward Bailleval, a little after the first two. In conclusion, after taking into account the possibility of perceptual illusions during the extinguishing of the lights, GEIPAN classifies this case "B": probable observation of Thai lanterns.
