Constant low but distinct, penetrating, background rumbling droning noise which surges/pulses similar but not the same as a parked car or lorry engine idling in the near distance. Can hear every night for years and no getting away from it, often awake through insomnia in early hours so most noticeable then, not sure if this noise is cause of my frequent nightly waking but it's very wearing. Over the years of the hum being present I Have in the past tried to prove to myself that sound is not within my home by turning off mains electric, got rid of fridge as noise is similar tone to compressor. Walked outside to try and pinpoint source without success, driven around to see if fan noise, compressor or conveyor noise from industrial estate few miles away as the potential source but this was not the case. Looked online into high voltage power lines as they are fairly close, power station 5 miles away and jury out on that one, also mobile masts and phone signals RF soup we live in these days could be the cause. Also thought it might be tunnelling machinery as many old mining and man made underground storage facilities within a few miles of where i live. Perhaps low frequency resonance of caves or tunnels from mining in area and even natural limestone caverns in the area. I tried moving rooms In the house to sleep in, now try to sleep downstairs on settee as it seems worse upstairs, but still hear it clearly. It's possible hedges front and back of house dampen sound slightly. My partner at the time when noise started years ago could not hear it but has heard it since but not constantly like me, she had to concentrate to hear it and described sound same as me, like lorry idling in distance low brum, brum. I'm not sure if anyone else in the area hears it, but ex girlfriend few miles away was also driven to distraction by it and described same sound as me, totally independently.
