Low frequency - sounds like an airconditioning unit or low frequency diesel truck in the distance. Is louder sometimes than other. Sometimes really loud - particularly at night when everything is quiet. Louder inside the house (which is made of wood with a tin roof than outside. But you can still hear it outside. I was housesitting at Wights Mountain for 10 years while I heard the hum and would regularly go and stay in another part of the city (West End) every few weeks when the owner was home. I didn't hear the hum in this other area. The house at Wights Mountain is on semi-rural acreage on a hill surrounded by higher hills. My theory was that the circle of hills acted to trap the sound and acted like a giant resonator and that the wooden house I was in acted like the sound chamber of a guitar and resonated at the same frequency as the sound. My other theory was that the noise itself was a build of industrial noise pollution from who knows where. I even got the council in at one point with a decibel measurer but the equipment was not sensitive enough to register the sound and because it was daytime there was probably too much other ambient interference. Because I was living alone at the house, I couldn't get anyone else to verify whether they heard the sound. The owner of the house - a male in his 50s- didn't hear it as far as I know. The way I dealt with the problem and the only way I could get to sleep at night was by playing CDs of surf noise. But on bad nights - these had to be very loud to mask the noise. It took me quite a while to come up with this solution. Sometimes I would play a creek running over rocks CD. The irregularity of the surf noise works much better for me than a constant static noise. Constant white noise with no variation drives me mad. Thank you so much for doing this research. The hum was the bane of my life for years.
What they reported
First noticed: 2009
Pitch: around 25 hz or lower - sine wave. It also pulsates
Loudest: During the night
Where: Indoors
Symptoms: Insomnia, Extreme irritation, desperation
Changes with weather: No. I tried to make all sorts of correlations but the fluctuation of noise appeared to be quite random.

A very low pitched hum in my right ear. Sounds like a diesel truck idling nearby. Obviously I eliminated the possibility of it being machinery. It worsened when laying down. Was still there …

It is a low-frequency humming noise that has no explanation or source. I hear it mostly at night and inside my home. The noise is similar to a train or a diesel truck engine idling and the…
