Pilot witness in Gironde, France

On March 4, 2012, at around 8 p.m., a female driver and her passenger made an observation that intrigued them. Stopped at a stop sign, they saw pass from right to left 4 white lights forming the four corners of a rectangle several meters above the ground. These lights disappeared at the height of the treetops. No particular noise was heard. GEIPAN first considered a luminous object carried by the wind, but the wind direction (West) does not match the object's movement (South -> North). The investigation with military air traffic control, to search for possible aircraft, yielded only a negative result. A GEIPAN investigator went to the site, at night, and observed then recorded on video a luminous phenomenon that could fully explain the observation: indeed, the headlights of cars coming toward the observer reflect on the catenary wires of the railway line; the reflections move from right to left, then disappear, as the witnesses indicated. It is highly likely that this is the same phenomenon as the one observed by the witnesses. The witness did not wish to meet the investigator to refine the investigation. GEIPAN classifies this case "B": probable observation of reflections of car headlights on the railway catenary wires.
