A low hum in Asheville, NC 28803 USA

Low pitched. intermittent rumble, like a motor. Sometimes like a coded signal or low pitched morse code. I had never heard this sound before moving into my condo. At first I thought this sound was coming from inside the walls, but could never pinpoint it. It almost sounds like an appliance motor being turned on and off. Or sometimes like the sound of a diesel engine in the distance. The hum is intermittent, and sometimes the pitch oscillates between 100 Hz and 200 Hz, like a coded signal.
