On September 6, 2015 at 12:15 AM, a witness was driving between Airvault (79) and Viennay (79) when he observed the silent movement of 8 to 9 lights in a clear sky. They first formed two different shapes: the first 4 in a square, the last 3 or 4 irregularly aligned. The witness then stopped in a parking lot and distinguished more particularly the last light, above him. He saw a perfect circle of orange to yellow color and took a photo with his mobile phone. The observation lasted 8 to 9 minutes in total. No other testimony was collected. The observation matches well a formation of Thai lanterns, whether for the general appearance, the dominant orange color, the time on a weekend night, or the closer and more detailed observation of one of them passing overhead ("light appearing as a perfect circle whose orange or yellow color circulated inside"). The point concerning the speed estimate (90 km/h) cannot match reality given the wind speed presumably. But speed estimation is always difficult and subjective; moreover, it is not consistent here with other elements of the testimony that indicate a much lower speed. Consequently, GEIPAN classifies this observation as B: high probability of Thai lanterns.
