A triangle shape in Yonne, France

On Friday, August 26, 2016 at 10:39 PM, a witness and his wife were surprised to notice the silent passage from NO to SE of three orange lights in the clear night sky. The size of these lights was compared to that of a golf ball held at arm's length. These three lights were positioned in a triangle. They were then hidden by the trees in the landscape. Only one testimony was collected. The witnesses very likely saw a passage of Thai lanterns. Indeed, releases are frequent on summer evenings and moreover on weekends, and it is common for this to take the appearance of a triangle of orange glows as described. The wind, recorded at 4 km on Météociel, is from the north, compatible with a movement, real or estimated at the observation site, from NO to SE. The reported observation duration is short (5 sec), but the observed angular movement of the UAP in the sky is also necessarily limited (30 or 40 degrees between the house to the south and the tall trees located to the north about ten meters away). This remains compatible with a movement of lanterns at low altitude (50 or 100 m), given the uncertainties or possible errors in UAP observations: here probably an overestimation of double (factor 2) or more on the reality of the wind speed (6 km/h recorded at 4 km) or on the observation duration. The witness's main objection to this hypothesis comes from the feeling of having seen a solid surface between the 3 luminous points. This is also classic for observations of point lights at night: the eye fills the void! This objection is based on the observation of stars hidden during the passage. This very precise observation seems difficult to assert given the rapidity of the whole observation, and given that it did not appear clear enough and a source of strangeness for the witness to report it immediately (and not secondarily). Consequently, the most likely explanation is that of Thai lanterns. The Geipan classifies the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
