A low hum in Gironde, France
On August 15, 2016, at around 12:30 a.m., a witness is astonished to see a luminous phenomenon in the clear sky: three white lights in a triangle and a red light in the center move continuously at very low altitude. The witness hears a loud humming sound. The observation lasts 10 seconds. The witness takes a photograph with their mobile phone, but it does not reproduce what they observed. Only one testimony will be collected.
The witness is surprised, most likely by an airplane passing exceptionally low, possibly a military aircraft (plane or helicopter). It is not listed on civilian aircraft tracking sites, and the request to the defense authorities was made too late (archives accessible for one month). Nevertheless, the description of 3 white lights with a red light in the center is fairly typical of testimonies involving airplanes (because these are lights that can be present in addition to the standard navigation lights), and it is common for witnesses not to recognize the standard lights (steady green and red plus white flashing).
See cases on the site www.geipan.fr, for example CONCHES-EN-OUCHE (27) 23.02.2016 or case [D417] of MUNSTER (68) near COLMAR (68) 13.11.2015.
Note here that the witness hears a humming sound like an airplane engine.
Consequently, Geipan classifies this case as A: observation of an aircraft.
