A triangle shape in Finist�re, France

On August 14, 2015 at around 5 p.m., a witness spots in the sky a triangular shape advancing slowly with a rocking motion. Using binoculars, he makes out a royal-blue color when the object passes overhead. The object stays below the clouds and moves without sound from NNW to SSE. Only one testimony is collected. The weather recorded at Lanvéoc, a few kilometers away, indicates a sustained NW wind with an overcast sky. At Brest the aviation weather is as follows: METAR LFRB 141500Z 31010KT 280V340 9999 SCT017 BKN030 16/12; broken cloud base at 1700 feet (500m), under a thick layer at 3000 feet (1000m). The observed object, flying from NNW to SSE, therefore has the characteristics of an object carried by the wind. The described shape could suggest a hot-air balloon, but the flight time is unusual for this type of flight (balloonists prefer to fly early in the morning or at sunset to avoid thermal currents). Moreover, the area is off-limits to overflight due to numerous military sites. Finally, since the cloud ceiling is low, and the object appears almost point-like to the naked eye, it must necessarily be a relatively small object (if the object has an apparent size on the order of one-tenth the size of the Moon and it flies at 500 m altitude, it measures less than 50 cm). A child's balloon, perhaps a shiny mylar balloon released nearby, is much more likely (very common models of various shapes. A festival is noted at Roscanvel (NW of the observation location) on August 14 in the evening. Fairground stalls may have been set up that day. Due to this information, the GEIPAN classifies this case as "B" as a probable observation of a child's helium-filled balloon.
