On January 17, 2013 at 5:30 a.m., a female driver's attention was drawn to the presence above the road of a large rectangular object with green and red lights. The witness slowed down and took a photograph with her mobile phone. No other testimony was collected. Following a thorough and well-documented investigation, it turned out that a military transport plane had taken off from Istres toward the northwest just before the witness's observation, then turned south to cross the witness's path at a relatively low altitude. C17 aircraft are often equipped with green reflectors on the sides or on the ailerons: it is these devices that the witness may have noticed and photographed. GEIPAN classifies the case as "B": probable observation of a military transport aircraft taking off from the Istres base. Certain elements of the testimony are not entirely consistent with this hypothesis, which prevents classification as "A."
