Pilot witness in Eure-et-Loir, France
On Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 3:30 PM, a witness piloting his plane, then located slightly above the Dreux airfield, made an evasive maneuver around an object shaped like a polygon with many facets, black and a few green. This object, with an estimated size of 2 to 3 meters in diameter, seemed static or moving very slowly. By the time the pilot turned around, the object had disappeared.
The object encountered is probably a hot-air balloon (or solar balloon), launched by amateurs. The black color, the "apparent" absence of a gondola, and the size are compatible with this hypothesis. We have not found other examples of a hot-air balloon of this shape. The balloon's disappearance can at a stretch be explained by the plane's turbulence, which would have destabilized it and made it descend rapidly.
