It sounds like a distant diesel engine or generator that can get so loud other noises do not drown it out. I've found that the hum gets so loud sometimes that background noises do not mask it. Other times it's quieter, so it's easier to ignore. I also initially thought it pulsed but have come to realize the pulse is the interruptions of my breathing, etc. If I hold my breath and listen it does not pulse, it is a constant noise.
