An orange orb in Ardennes, France

On June 1, 1952 at 2:40 a.m., two people from a ship's crew anchored in the roadstead of Port-Gentil (Gabon) observe a luminous phenomenon in the sky. At first, the second officer very distinctly sees an object coming from inland which stops, turns to the right, and resumes its initial course, this happening twice (the second turn occurring directly above the ship). He telephones the captain, who then looks with binoculars and for three minutes sees an extremely bright, phosphorescent, circular orange glow. It moves at very high speed along a roughly straight trajectory. The captain loses sight of the phenomenon. The captain reports this observation. A sketch is made (author unknown). No other testimony is collected. Hypotheses of a bolide (meteor) or a missile launch were put forward but not confirmed. GEIPAN classifies this case as D1: strange and unidentified phenomenon.
