both described an orange orb
Marne, France · 1981-01-23 · from the GEIPAN archive
This observation case is one of the cases classified as "C" by GEPAN and was the subject of a re-examination (see the document Investigation Notes). On January 23, 1981, around 9 p.m., a witness returning from work on a moped was intrigued by a large round shape to the East in the sky. This shape emitted an intense orange light. According to the witness, it changed position then suddenly disappeared. During the investigation, no other testimony was collected. This case has little substance (single witness, short observation), the description of the observed UAP is fairly precise. The sincerity and credibility of the witness were never called into question. The described phenomenon presents many common characteristics (shape, size, color) with a perfectly known astronomical object: the Moon at its rising. Moreover, the Moon was indeed present in the area of sky observed. It is not the witness's visual perception that is in question, but the interpretation the witness makes of their observation through their state of mind (fatigue, night driving on frozen ground, presence of fog). In the current GEIPAN classification, this case of low strangeness is classified "A", observation linked to a misidentification with the Moon.
