GEIPAN continues to publish all of its archives on its public website www.geipan.fr. Among its publications are old cases classified at the time as type "C" cases, which are now being re-examined, for the sole purpose of being more relevant in the conclusions. Thanks to new technical means (software) and the investigation experience acquired over all these recent years, this re-examination sometimes leads to new remarks or even a change of classification explained in an investigation note. This observation case is one of the cases classified "C" in 1997 by SEPRA. On September 13, 1997 at 10 p.m., a witness observed, from his balcony, a very bright luminous point next to the moon. The witness filmed his observation and noted that the UAP moved very quickly and seemed to go around the moon. The witness also noted the presence of this phenomenon at 10:30 p.m., still in the same place. No copy of the video recording was transmitted to GEIPAN. This case is consistent (a single witness, but the UAP was filmed), the description of the observed UAP is very precise. The sincerity and credibility of the witness have never been called into question. The described phenomenon presents many common characteristics (observation duration, shape, size, color, position) with a perfectly known astronomical object: the planet Jupiter. Moreover, Jupiter was indeed present in the area of the sky observed, to the left of the moon, although the witness does not mention it. The alleged movements of the UAP can be perfectly explained by the movements of the camera. It is not the witness's visual perception that is in question, but the interpretation that the witness makes of his observation through his feelings (astonishment, night observation, interpretation of a video tape). In GEIPAN's current classification, this case of low strangeness is classified as UAP A, an observation linked to a misidentification with the planet Jupiter.
