An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Vienne, France

Through the glass wall of their living room, the witnesses see a very bright luminous ball pass by in 2 seconds. This description alone already suggests the observation of a bolide, that is, the entry into the atmosphere of a meteoroid. The luminous ball has a slight trail. GEIPAN received no other testimonies, and the BOAM site (Meteor Observer Database) did not record this type of event at that time. This testimony is very consistent due to the two witnesses and the precision of the description of the phenomenon's trajectory. The altitude estimate (100m) made intuitively is very likely wrong, as with all unknown phenomena: in this case, since the phenomenon was very bright, the witness interpreted it as very close, but without objective reference points. The very clear sky allowed the phenomenon to be highly visible, and perceived as all the closer. GEIPAN classifies this case "B": probable observation of a bolide. N.B. Because the witness observed the phenomenon through a window, GEIPAN also considered the hypothesis of an artificial light (motorcycle headlight, electric flashlight) coming from behind the witnesses, but the fields of view do not seem to match the observation directions.
