Moving in formation in Savoie, France

On July 6, 2015 at 10:45 PM, two people observed the passage of multiple bright points in the sky (between 15 and 20). These points, pink-orange in color, were in a line and moved silently in the direction of Aix-Les-Bains in a clear sky. The observation lasted about 10 to 15 seconds. Only one testimony was collected. The observation of orange balls crossing the sky in less than a minute, on a summer night, clearly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. The movement was observed from South to North, which is consistent with the South wind recorded at Chambéry-Aix-Les-Bains. The Météociel data for the day of the observation indicates a light South wind of 2 to 9 km/h recorded at Chambéry. The distance estimate made by the witness cannot be accurate since he had never seen this type of object. Because Thai lanterns are inherently low-luminosity (a large candle flame), they are always perceived as farther away and therefore larger and faster than they really are. See the article on estimating the size and distance of an unknown phenomenon on the GEIPAN website. The very regular movement of the objects in the sky is completely normal for an object carried by a light wind; if the objects fly over industrial areas with strong ventilation or large heat sources, the trajectory is of course irregular. Since lanterns are often released one after another, after the same delay corresponding to the time it takes to light the burner, the result is a very organized line of flying lights. The videos mentioned by the witness seem to correspond perfectly to Thai lantern releases. GEIPAN classifies this case as "B": probable observation of Thai lanterns.
