An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Oise, France

On September 26, 2015 at 11:59 PM, a witness observes about twenty lights in the sky, similar to streetlights, but moving. Only one testimony was collected. The observation of orange balls crossing the sky in a few minutes, on a weekend night, strongly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. The movement is observed from northeast to southeast, which is perfectly consistent with the northeast wind recorded at Creil (see the Météociel data). The witnesses did think of Thai lanterns, but did not understand how one of them could go faster. It is noted that this supposed lantern is the last one, and therefore released after the others, which has not yet reached the same altitude. It is possible that the wind at altitude has a slightly different speed than the wind near the ground; a perspective effect must also be considered: at equal speed, a nearby object appears faster than its more distant counterpart (see diagram). The GEIPAN classifies this case "B": probable observation of Thai lanterns.
