Hovering in Haut-Rhin, France

On June 24, 2015 at around 9:45 PM (the date of June 25 is mistakenly mentioned on the questionnaire by the witness), a person watching TV had their attention drawn outside by the movement of about ten bright colored lights hovering above the hill and the treetops. No noise was heard during the observation of about fifteen minutes. Only one testimony was collected. The observation of flying lights crossing the sky in a few minutes, on a weekend night, clearly suggests illuminated balloons (LED balloons or Thai lanterns), probably released nearby at the end of a private party (Saint-Jean celebration?). The witness indicates in their account a movement toward the West, but the drawing indicates a movement from NNE to SSW (see the cartographic reconstruction). The movement was observed overall from North to South, which is compatible with the northwest to north wind recorded at Mulhouse-Bâle (at 9 PM: light north wind of 7 to 11 km/h shifting to the west at 11 PM: Météociel. GEIPAN classifies this case "B" probable observation of LED illuminated balloons or Thai lanterns. The multiple colors and the long duration of the phenomenon point rather toward LED balloons, because Thai lanterns most often have a yellow-orange dominance due to the flame which is the light source.
