Hovering in Haut-Rhin, France
On May 26, 1980 at around 7 p.m., two walkers spotted an unusual object in the clear sky. One of the witnesses, a marine engineering officer, described an object of metallic appearance that, on a round base, had the shape, in its upper part, of a silver-colored dome. The object, hovering 200 or 300 m above the ground, seemed to oscillate on its axis. Its lower part was darker and intermittently showed a reddish luminescence. During the 6 minutes of observation, no noise and no condensation were noticed. The object disappeared into the clouds in successive stages. At the Basel/Mulhouse airport, a radar echo was recorded but was lost in the traffic of private and general aviation and therefore of little use. No other witnesses and no other information were gathered either in France or in the German border area. This phenomenon remains unexplained.
