Red lights in Seine-et-Marne, France
On September 28, 2014, between 9:02 PM and 9:08 PM, a motorist observes, from his car, the slow and silent movement of about ten scintillating lights in the night sky. The movement is in the same direction, at low altitude, and at the same speed for all the lights. As they move away, they are described by the witness as small glowing halos. Other motorists were present and parked on the road. No other testimony will be collected.
The observation of orange or red balls crossing the sky in a few minutes, on a weekend night, clearly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party.
The movement is observed from west to northeast (see the map), which is consistent with the south wind recorded at Roissy (see the Météociel data for the day of the observation).
Because of the relatively low brightness of these lanterns, witnesses generally estimate them to be farther away, and therefore larger, than they actually are.
