Red lights in Vosges, France

On January 28, 2014 at around 10:15 PM, a witness outdoors observes for 2 to 3 minutes the movement of a luminous UAP in the shape of a halo, then a very bright red ball with a small blue tail. The trajectory is complex (straight line, then stop, followed by a U-turn with a slight deviation, again a straight trajectory in the opposite direction and at the same height, diagonal movement to the left to disappear almost immediately in the sky). The object is first perceived at 500m, then close to the witness (about 15m) before moving away again. Only one testimony is collected. An investigator will meet the witness (see the investigation report). Due to the unusual but very coherent nature of the descriptions provided by the witness and the spatio-temporal situation of the phenomenon making any human activity capable of accounting for the described phenomenon highly improbable, it seems logical to admit the current impossibility of giving a reasoned prosaic explanation. Only the explanation by a ball lightning phenomenon, certainly very poorly understood but whose multiple antics seem to assert themselves through the very numerous testimonies collected over more than a century, could possibly match the complex behavior of the phenomenon. There are indeed some similarities with certain testimonies related to lightning (shape, dimensions, color, luminosity, slow, flexible movement close to the ground, sudden disappearance) that may lead to classifying this case in that category. But there is no factual element allowing this hypothesis to be consolidated. GEIPAN classifies this case as unexplained (category D1), because the description is detailed, the observation rather strange and made in good conditions.
