It sounds like a large truck idling - the noise rises and falls cyclically I was always sure the sound was real because I could feel the wood floor boards vibrating, as well as hearing the sound. I just could not figure out where it was coming from. Some people in my neighborhood thought it might be train engines idling - this would be about three miles away but low frequency sounds do travel a long way. I thought perhaps it was road repair on the freeway not far away which would have to be done at night, but I had no way to find out whether any work was being done. Thankfully, the noise went away some time ago.
