This is not an internal phenomenon. I hear it inside the house, outside the house, I have driven several miles from my home and heard it when I am still and the area is quiet. It sounds like it is coming from at least 3 miles away, but could be much further. The sound is virtually identical to a passing aircraft except it does not change in pitch or volume. I am also a pilot and have worked at a small airport.
What they reported
First noticed: Before 1990
Pitch: The tone does not sound like the hum
Loudest: During the night
Where: Equal indoors and outdoors
Symptoms: I experience no medical symptoms. Just curiosity.
Changes with weather: I am not aware of any correlation, but I doubt I can hear it over rain.
What stood out: pilot witness
