An account in Oise, France

On September 29, 2016, at around 10:56 PM, a witness looks at the cloudy sky and sees above Cauffry park a luminous phenomenon (shaped like an enormous helicopter blade) that seems to spin silently on itself while staying in the same spot. The observation lasts between 50 and 55 minutes, then the phenomenon suddenly disappears. Only one testimony is collected. The observation has many points in common with one made at the same time 2 or 3 km away (see the case RANTIGNY (60) 29.09.2016), which leads to adopting the same conclusions. It is most likely laser beams, coming from a nightclub or a festive or special event, reflecting off the cloud layer or the fine rain screen (both were present that evening). Depending on atmospheric conditions, the effective distance of a laser is highly variable; it can reach dozens of kilometers, which can make the phenomenon fleeting or even exceptional at a large distance from the point of emission. GEIPAN has not identified the emitter of the beam, but has several cases with similar and identified effects. Consequently, GEIPAN classifies the case as B: probable observation of a laser display (sky rose or bright spots).
