On November 29 at around 11:30 PM, a witness observes for less than 10 seconds, from his balcony, 6 luminous points crossing the sky. The witness states that these points, gray-white in color, seem to form a single dark mass that hides the stars. The group disappears from the witness's field of vision. No noise is heard. Luminous points in formation crossing part of the sky in less than a minute, on a Saturday evening, suggests the passage of Thai lanterns. Let us check whether the weather report indicates a local wind consistent with the observed movement. The weather report for Caen indicates a weak wind, shifting from southeast to north between 10 PM and 11 PM, then becoming very weak and unstable in the middle of the night (weather data). It is therefore impossible to know precisely the wind that was blowing at 11:15 PM in Hérouville, very close to Caen, and thus to confirm this hypothesis. Compared to other lantern testimonies, which most often mention orange balls, the witness here specifies points of gray-white color. The black, flat mass described by the witness is most likely an illusion called a "contour illusion" common in cases of observing a group of lanterns or a triplet of satellites (but at that time, there are no visible satellites). Given the uncertainty about the wind, and because of the unusual gray-white color, GEIPAN does not have enough elements to confirm this hypothesis of Thai lanterns, despite good similarities. GEIPAN classifies this case "C" due to lack of information.
