On September 7, 2014, at around 7 a.m., many people in the south of France observed the passage of a luminous phenomenon in the sky. These observations were the subject of articles in the local press. GEIPAN received several testimonies.
This phenomenon has all the characteristics of a meteoroid re-entering the atmosphere (a small rocky body orbiting the Sun).
The phenomenon occurred vertically above Spanish Catalonia, the inclination is steep (about 65°), and the phenomenon occurred between 60 and 25 km in altitude.
In the opinion of astronomers, the meteoroid behind this phenomenon was not on a trajectory close to asteroid 2014RC, which grazed Earth at less than 40,000 km on the same day. The two phenomena are not linked.
