An orange orb in Landes, France

On October 10, 2011 at around 6:20 a.m., a motorist spotted an orange ball moving across the sky. The witness photographed the luminous phenomenon, which alternately followed an ascending then descending trajectory. No sound was heard during the observation. No other testimony about this phenomenon was collected. The witness, after receiving information about Thai lanterns (videos, photos, articles), endorsed the likelihood of this hypothesis. Even though the early hour is unusual for this type of observation, this probability was also retained by GEIPAN. The weather conditions (very weak, unstable wind) are compatible with the observation. This case is classified "B": probable observation of the passage of a Thai lantern.
