An account in Martinique, France

On December 25, 2011, between 6:35 p.m. and 6:40 p.m., a motorist and his passenger noticed the presence in the sky of a bright stationary light performing pendulum-like movements. Thinking at first it was fireworks, the witness continued on his way, then stopped to take photographs. Upon arriving home, he noticed the presence of 3 luminous colored masses following each other in single file while gaining altitude. The objects disappeared very quickly. No noise was heard during the observation, which lasted several minutes. No other testimony about this phenomenon was collected by the gendarmerie. The sky lantern hypothesis remains the most likely; it is compatible with the wind and the photographs, and highly plausible given the date of the observation. However, it should be noted that the irregular movement of the lanterns raises questions: one would have to assume the presence of updrafts along their path. This case is classified as B — probable observation of Thai sky lanterns.
