On Saturday, September 17, 2011, at around 11 p.m., a witness on their balcony is intrigued by the passage of an object they first take for a plane on fire heading toward Bordeaux-Mérignac airport (from south to north), at an elevation of about 40°. The observation lasts about 1 minute and 15 seconds. This case of observing red lights moving in silence resembles several known phenomena, but certain characteristics of the observation do not fit: an atmospheric re-entry of a satellite or space debris does not match the momentary stop and the change of trajectory observed; astronomical or atmospheric hypotheses also do not seem to fit; although the colors described (red, orange, yellow) evoke flames and the time and day are compatible with a festive event, the hypothesis of a Thai lantern (sky lantern) fits poorly: unsuitable shape, change of direction, change of appearance. The hypothesis of a powered and lit airship or dirigible for festive or commercial purposes seems compatible with the observation and cannot be completely ruled out given that the observation takes place on a Saturday evening.
