A low hum in Reuben avenue, Brooklyn

Like a idling Diesel engine. Perhaps vibrating the timber and glass of a window a little. One particular time I could hear the hum when I entered the living room, as I opened the door to enter it would appear, closing the door would would halt the noise. At all other times moving rooms made no difference. Hearing the hum conincided with a period of anxiety and associated symptoms including dizzy spells, etopic heartbeat, muscle fibrillation in my legs and other odd sensations in my head particularly when trying to fall asleep. Speculative causes of anxiety being pending birth of second child, work stress, poisoning or virus - started suddenly one day. Hum became less apparent when I moved house and over the course of a couple of months completely disappeared.
