Seine-Maritime, France · 1956-04-08 · from the GEIPAN archive
On April 8, 1956, at around 11:40 PM to 11:45 PM, three witnesses in the municipality of La Londe (76) observe, in the clear night with no Moon, in a westerly direction, a red ball. The phenomenon seems stationary for several minutes, then seems to move as the witnesses move. The phenomenon disappears behind the trees. The observation lasted about twenty minutes. The gendarmerie will collect three other testimonies for the same date and at 11:30 PM to 11:45 PM: these witnesses, in a car in Elbeuf (76), describe a round red shape in motion. The observation will be very short (4 to 5 seconds) in the direction of Orival (76). The available information does not confirm that the two groups saw the same phenomenon. The astronomical check indicates, for the first group, Venus near the horizon at about 45° north of the observation direction, and for the second group, which is looking north, no particular celestial body is visible. This case is not very strange and the information is too imprecise: GEIPAN classifies this case as C.
