An account in Ain, France
On November 20, 1954, between 12:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., several people would see a luminous phenomenon in the sky. Only one testimony was collected. The witness describes a UAP moving vertically in a zigzag from the SSE in a cloudless sky. The UAP is sometimes bright, sometimes dark, with a halo. This long observation of a large bright point in the sky first suggests an astronomical phenomenon: the presence of the star Sirius is noted to the SE at 12:30 a.m., then moving toward the South. The observed halo could be the result of an atmospheric haze from desert sand. The zigzag movements could be caused by the autokinetic illusion (a common perception illusion when observing a bright point in the dark). The observation direction is not described precisely enough to confirm this hypothesis (azimuth roughly estimated to the SSE without change over time, elevation expressed in meters instead of being estimated in degrees. Due to the lack of precise information about the position in the sky, GEIPAN classifies this case as C: lack of information.
