An account in Haute-Garonne, France

On December 14, 2015 at 7:15 a.m., a witness and his wife observe, through fog, a bright point in the sky that seems to "pitch" and grow slightly larger. Only one testimony is collected. Plotting on a geographic map the observation direction described by the witness indicates an azimuth of around 135° (southeast) (see attached map). The sky chart indicates in this direction the planet Venus at 22° elevation (versus 60° indicated by the witness), very bright (magnitude -3.6). The star Arcturus, less bright (Mag 0.15), is at azimuth 117° and an elevation of 51°. The phenomenon described by the witness has all the characteristics of a very bright celestial body observed through light fog: the other stars are obscured, and the phenomenon appears somewhat distorted. The impression that this light "pitched" is characteristic of the autokinetic illusion (see: The perception of the movement of a bright point in the sky.) GEIPAN classifies this case as B: probable observation of the planet Venus or the star Arcturus.
