An account in Charente-Maritime, France

On March 21, 2016 at 11:00 PM, a witness observed in the sky toward the South a fixed, very bright white round object, to the left of the Moon. No particular noise was heard. The observation with the naked eye then with binoculars lasted for one hour. The object had completely disappeared by 4:00 AM. No other testimony was collected. The witness was surprised by Jupiter. This is common; the planet's appearance is much brighter than a star and shows no twinkling. Although the witness attributed to it a brightness comparable to the Moon and an enormous size (but still much smaller than the Moon in his drawing), there is no doubt that it was Jupiter. Indeed, the description, made over a duration of 5 hours, of the trajectory of the UAP in the sky relative to that of the Moon, as well as the witness's drawing, correspond perfectly to the celestial configuration that night. In the reconstruction (see PPT document) the witness's description is found: the UAP is Jupiter "to the left of the Moon" and the "star to the right of the Moon" actually visible is either Alphard (magnitude 1.95 to the right below, the case in the drawing) or Regulus (magnitude 1.35 to the right above). Consequently, GEIPAN classifies the case as A: misidentification with Jupiter.
