An orange orb in Dordogne, France
On September 13, 2015 at around 12:25 AM, a witness at his home sees in the clear sky the silent passage of two glowing orange-red balls of light. Only one testimony was collected.
The observation of orange balls crossing the sky in a few minutes, on a weekend night, clearly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party.
The movement was observed from the Southeast toward the Southwest, which is consistent with the Southeast-to-North wind recorded at Brive-Souillac (see the Météociel report for the day of the observation at Brive-Souillac).
The very precise testimony and especially photo 477 allow this hypothesis to be confirmed: the "madeleine" shape, the characteristic color, the yellower center leave no doubt. The other photos show the phenomenon from a distance and are harder to interpret.
The witness, an amateur astronomer, was surprised by this unusual object, of a nature quite different from the celestial bodies he knows well. Because of the fairly low intrinsic brightness of Thai lanterns, they are often estimated to be more distant and therefore larger than they really are.
