On July 1, 2015, starting at 10:30 PM, several people in the department of Alpes de Haute-Provence observed the movement of luminous phenomena in the sky. Some witnesses mentioned geometric shapes or a kind of vessel formed by points of light. The local press also reported the sightings (see the last testimony). The observation of lights in the sky, arranged in regular geometric shapes, suggests an aerial patrol on exercise or demonstration. A check with the Patrouille de France, based in Salon de Provence, tells us that the patrol exceptionally flew at night in this region on July 1 and 3: on July 1 to rehearse the demonstration that took place on July 3 for the baptism of the graduating classes. The silence accompanying the observation is completely normal because the noise of an aircraft seen head-on, from more than a few kilometers away, is very faint. The 8 Alphajets of the Patrouille de France are equipped with powerful headlights visible from more than 10 km along the flight path. When the aircraft turn, the headlight beam changes direction, and observers located in the initial flight path thus see it suddenly disappear: these aircraft, seen from the side, are only visible by their red or green position lights, which are not powerful enough to be visible at great distance. Seen head-on, the approach is not perceptible, the aircraft seem motionless, only the lateral movement is perceived, and it can be slight. GEIPAN received reports of several observations of the same patrol: from Valensole (04) and Sainte-Tulle (04) on July 1, and from Villeneuve (04), 10 km away, on July 3. During the first days of July, GEIPAN receives, every year since 2008, reports of similar observations in Provence; in particular one was reported at Villeneuve (04) on July 5, 2013. GEIPAN classifies this case "A": certain observations of the 8 Alphajets of the Patrouille de France.
