On September 11, 2012, between midnight and 2 a.m., two people aboard a sailboat approaching the port of Île d'Yeu observed the presence of three red lights, aligned and tilted, above the ocean, to the right of the green beacon at the entrance to the port. The phenomenon remained stationary for several minutes and made no noise: it disappeared suddenly. The two witnesses then continued their maneuvers to enter the port. The observation of 3 red balls at low altitude, almost stationary for 3 to 4 minutes, suggests Thai lanterns. The local wind recorded at St Sauveur (see weather report) indicates a slight southwest wind: the witnesses should have seen a slight movement to their right; but the witnesses themselves were moving, and the port of Joinville (northwest coast of the island) is sheltered from southwest winds. Thai lanterns are most often released after parties on Saturday evenings; the observation was on a Tuesday around 1 a.m., but in a highly touristy area. The simultaneous extinction of the 3 lights is very unlikely for lanterns. Given these 3 factors unfavorable to the Thai lantern hypothesis, GEIPAN classifies this case "C," due to lack of information and cross-checking. The testimony was submitted too late to GEIPAN for a search to be conducted with air traffic control.
