An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Drôme, France

On July 11, 2012 at 9:30 PM, three people observe the slow west-to-east passage of a bright ball of vivid yellow color that splits in two before disappearing. No sound is heard during the passage. After rejecting the hypothesis of Thai lanterns (eastward movement not consistent with the northwest wind, separation into two objects), the hypothesis of atmospheric reentry of space debris is favored: the witness's description, the fragmentation, the duration, the eastward movement are all compatible. The Calsky catalog of atmospheric reentries mentions two reentries on that day, but they do not a priori correspond to this event (near-polar orbits). The BOAM catalog (meteor observers) mentions nothing at that time. This case is classified "B": probable observation of atmospheric reentry of space debris.
