Pilot witness in Aube, France

On Wednesday, October 27, 1954, at the Mailly camp (commune of Mailly-le-Camp), two people, including a colonel, observe around 5:45 PM a very bright segment standing out against the blue-green background of the clear sky "slightly North relative to the setting sun" (2 to 3 minutes after sunset). The object is located at an angular height of 45° to 20°, it is described as motionless for 10 to 15 seconds, for a total observation duration of 25 to 30 seconds. This segment, similar to shiny metal, is tilted 30° from the vertical, then suddenly becomes a point in place for 3 seconds before disappearing. Its size is between a third and half of the Moon's diameter, i.e., 10' to 15'. Only the colonel's testimony is collected in an observation report, and some explanations in the handwritten report are illegible. The witness thinks he probably saw an airplane in a turn lit from below by the setting sun. This type of observation, frequent nowadays due to intense air traffic, is observable every evening in clear skies shortly after sunset. GEIPAN classifies this case as B: probable observation of an airplane lit by the setting sun.
