Haute-Corse, France · 2003-01-11 · from the GEIPAN archive
GEIPAN continues to publish all of its archives on its public website www.geipan.fr. Among its publications are old cases classified at the time (A, B, C or D) which are now being re-examined, with the sole aim of being more relevant in the conclusions. Thanks to new technical means (software) and the investigation experience acquired over all these recent years, this re-examination sometimes leads to new remarks or even a change of classification. This observation case, previously classified D and named CORTE (2B) 2003, is part of a set of cases recently re-examined. SUMMARY On Saturday 11 January 2003 at around 6:15-6:20 pm, a motorist driving a car and his passenger on the RN193 heading towards Corte (2B) were surprised by the rapid and silent passage in the sky of a strong green light with white flashes. The witnesses describe a circular shape. During the observation, which lasted a few seconds, the object moved on a South-North trajectory. The witnesses' description, in a clear night sky, is typical of an observation of the atmospheric re-entry of a meteoroid: - short duration of a few seconds, strong angular speed; - multiple intense colors, green (fluorescent), yellow with halos. Here, the witnesses do not describe trails but rather a round shape. T1 distinguishes various internal details in this circle, such as openings and position lights. T2 notes no detail in this luminous circle, which he also describes at the end as a "streak of light". There is no perception of noise, but the witnesses are in a car and a meteoroid is often silent for witnesses. Since 2003, the date of the observation, GEIPAN's experience with testimonies of this type has greatly increased, also in collaboration with specialized sites for collecting testimonies (IMO, BOAM, FRIPON, REFORME). Given the descriptive elements frequently present during confirmed meteoroid re-entries (as observed with many cross-checks over large distances on the ground, thanks also to the aforementioned sites), there is a strong probability that this is the case for this observation. Consequently, GEIPAN classifies the case as B: probable observation of a meteoroid re-entry.
