An account in Nouvelle-Caldonie, France

GEIPAN continues to publish all of its archives on its public website www.geipan.fr. Among its publications are old cases classified at the time (A, B, C or D) which are now being re-examined, with the sole aim of being more relevant in the conclusions. Thanks to new technical means (software) and the investigative experience acquired over all these recent years, this re-examination sometimes leads to new remarks or even a change in classification. This observation case, previously classified D and named LA FOA (988) 19.04.1991, is part of a set of cases recently re-examined. SUMMARY On 19 April 1991 at around 5:00-5:30 pm, three witnesses are at the top of a treeless plateau at the Amieu pass in the municipality of SARRAMEA in New Caledonia. They suddenly observe the passage of two luminous phenomena in the clear sky. Despite their brief observations (2 to 3 seconds for T1 and T2) up to about ten seconds (for T3), they describe a phenomenon of circular shape ("discs," "round shape," "ball"), with varied colors (T1 "silvery," T2 "fluorescent green," and T3 "blue, pink, fluorescent green") moving silently along a straight East-West trajectory. The witnesses lose sight of the phenomenon hidden by trees. T1 thinks of the disintegration of a satellite. The gendarmerie investigation rules out an aircraft flight. COMMENTARY Of low strangeness but good consistency (3 witnesses, fairly precise testimonies), this case turns out to be very probably an observation of a meteoroid re-entry (see the investigation report). The description of the UAP provided by the witnesses is indeed characteristic of this type of phenomenon: very rapid movement of 2 luminous objects, observation duration of 2 to 3 seconds. This conclusion is much easier today than 27 years ago. GEIPAN has since accumulated many testimonies, and nowadays several websites record testimonies of natural meteoroid re-entries. It can be noted that these re-entries can be observed in daylight, with one or several glows (fragmentation), with or without sound. The case of 8 April 2018 recorded in the USA is one example among others of cases similar to that of our witnesses. It was in daylight, there were several observers, several glows (fragmentation), no trails, no sound (see the example on the IMO website). The short duration of the observation as well as the East-to-West trajectory argue against a possible satellite re-entry. This was also confirmed by the absence of any recorded artificial re-entry that could correspond. The case is classified A: very probable observation of a meteoroid re-entry.
