Can't be blocked out by ear plugs. Low rumbling with variation in duration and intensity with some intermittent silence. Watching back hoe in operation one evening during my search for the source, I noticed that the sound could parallel this machine's operation in sound modulation and timing - but it was not conclusive as I was outdoors and beside the machine and not at a distance indoors.
