A low hum in San Francisco, 94131

Low hum that I noticed at night. It goes right through me. Earplugs don’t help. Wakes me up. Can’t stop hearing it once I notice it, omnipresent. Any other noise drowns it out for a moment, then it’s back. Like a distant motor I hear the hum in the walls sometimes. Putting a cup to my ear, I’ve heard it in different walls, but never the same walk twice (yet). I have a stethoscope arriving next week to continue investigating.
