A relentless, continuous hum throughout day and night - although much louder at night, peaking in intensity in the early hours to dawn. Most times it is steady - very similar to an electricity transformer (which I initially thought it was); but at other random times it pulses in frequency like a generator subject to load. We live in a small hamlet (population 240) in a valley with nearest town (pop 3000) over 20kms away. Vehicle traffic at night is virtually non-existent - perhaps 1 vehicle per hour. There is no industry in town likely to generate this hum (and I have checked all the transformers); town water treatment and pumping is over 5kms away, and only local light industry is a quarry also over 5kms away. The local area has significant limestone caves and associated underground water flows.
